When writing a research paper, the correct design of the text is no less important than its semantic load. In particular, it concerns quotes. Errors with similar elements of the text – one of the most common, in one form or another, most students allow them. Next, we analyze in detail how to make quotes in the course, and give some practical examples.
General guidelines for APA citation research paper
Abuse of direct quotations is a sign of low-quality coursework, intentionally “bloated” in its volume. In addition, non-unique quoted passages reduce the overall uniqueness of the course. Do not forget that this parameter is fundamental in many universities, and its unsatisfactory value leads to a decrease in the student’s score.
Too big quotes that occupy almost a third of a page are not allowed. The reasons are the same – reducing the uniqueness of the work, and hence it’s quality. Large quotations are permissible only in exceptional cases, for example, when it is necessary to analyze a fragment of a work of art, to consider the means of artistic expression used by the author, manner of presentation, etc.
Citing references is not always appropriate. The mention of various kinds of vocabularies and reference books is not welcome; references to such literature are permissible only in the introduction and, if necessary, the definition of terms.
How to make quotes in the course: the most common ways
There are two types of citations:
By design, this method is the easiest. Another advantage is that the text of the quotation can be changed, it is not necessary to use it literally. A student can state the essence of a quote in his own words, choose key ideas from it.
If the text in the sentence is in front of it, a colon is placed in front of it.
If the text is located after it, a comma is put after the quotes, then a dash and the subsequent text is written with a small letter.
The quotation can be located in the middle of a sentence, then it is separated from both sides with the help of a colon, a comma, and a dash, respectively.
How to give an incomplete quote? Sometimes it is necessary to quote without a certain part of it. In this case, the words that are omitted are replaced by a triple-point. This design can be located anywhere in the passage – at the end, in the middle or at the beginning. If three points are located before the text, that is, the beginning of the phrase is omitted, its continuation is written with a small letter. In one quote, several passages can be replaced with dots at once, at the discretion of the author of the work.
How to quote, referring to the source?
This method of introducing quotes resorted most often. It is allowed to use footnotes or square brackets.
